THOMAS D. PILSCHTom Pilsch is a retired Professor of the Practice of National Security from the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, where he taught a series of courses on Technology & War and National Security . He joined Georgia Tech in 1997 as the College of Computing’s assistant dean for continuing education and special programs. From 2003 to 2011 Tom was the college’s assistant dean for students and in 2011 became the college’s assistant dean for operations leading a team responsible for integrating the college’s operational support services for finance, human resources and technical and facilities support. In 2007 he began teaching for the Sam Nunn School and was appointed as a professor of the practice of national security in 2011. He retired from Georgia Tech in 2015. Prior to joining Georgia Tech, Tom served nearly 30 years on active duty with the United States Air Force in a variety of assignments in operations, maintenace, engineering and staff. He commanded USAF wings at Travis AFB, CA , and Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal . A command pilot, Tom flew a variety of operational aircraft ranging in size from the O-1 Bird Dog to the C-5 Galaxy . He retired from the Air Force in 1994 with the rank of Brigadier General . Tom’s professional interests include the history of war and warfare, military technology and operations, national security decision processes, and strategic planning, all of which he continues to pursue through writing, lecturing and consulting.
